A Short Poem on Love Written on a Summer Day in 2002
A Short Poem on Love Written on a Summer Day in 2002
All afternoon you must have worked on your hair-do
And thereby a service to mankind you did do
Deep in my heart you have caused an upheaval
You jumped through my life just like Evel Knievel
You wrecked my tranquility like he wrecked bikes
And my heart lies pierced now with six thousand spikes
Your angelic beauty will leave true believers
And you just kick butt like my idol, Colt Seavers.
Vorheriger TitelNächster TitelThis poem was indeed written on a whim on a very lovely day in June of 2002, originally for a barmaid at a disco I was a regular of at the time.
The barmaid, to the best of my knowledge, never received this poem.
It was intended as a substitute for a lengthy melancholy poem I was also working on at the time - I decided that "funny" should eventually triumph over "melancholy". I was through with melancholy, or so I thought.
"A Short Poem" was a sincere attempt, more like a fragment for a longer work still to be written, and it was written in an "ice-cream-licking" summer mood when I really did not feel like being particularly romantic.
Notes on the names in the text:
-- Evel Knievel: Name of a famous American stunt motorcyclist, mostly known for his record-setting stunt jumps in the 1960s. He was a highschool drop-out who later turned to crime and was part of a bank robbery, got convicted, reformed, and started to earn a living as a stunt performer.
-- Colt Seavers: Name of the main character in the television series "The Fall Guy", played by American actor Lee Majors. Seavers was also a professional stuntman who worked part-time as a private bounty-hunter (he chased criminals who had "jumped bail" in another State). The series aired in the US in the early 1980s and in Germany from 1986 on, where it became phenomenally popular with male youngsters years after its last episode had aired in the States.
We are all struggling stuntmen in love, aren't we?Norbert Franz, Anmerkung zum Gedicht
