Man pursues career as shepherd

David was a modern-day shepherd whose primary responsibility was to take care of his family’s small flock.
He had found three special places on the family’s property where the grass was plentiful and lush, and the water was cool and clean.
David had named all of his sheep, and he loved all of them very much.
“I’m proud of you, Son,” said Drew, David’s dad. “You’re doing a great job taking care of the sheep. But you won’t have to watch them much longer. Next spring, your mom and I are going to enroll you as a student in the nearby university where you can earn a degree and pursue a great corporate career.”
“But I’m happy caring for the sheep,” said David. “And they do need someone to take care of them.”
David wanted to honor his parents, so he enrolled in the university. Four years later, he graduated and returned home to live with his mom and dad.
Drew, along with David’s mother, Dorothee, threw a big celebration to welcome David home. “It’s great to have you home again, Son,” said his mom, as she hugged his neck.
“It sure is, David,” said Drew. “Tell us about your plans.”
“All I really want to do is get back to the task of caring for the sheep,” David replied. “How are they doing?”
“The sheep are doing well,” said Drew. “But we don’t have your two favorite sheep, Abraham and Sarah, anymore.”
“What happened to them?,” asked David.
“When you went to the university, we hired a guy named Donald,” said Dorothee. “He called us from his cell phone one evening to tell us that a wolf had attacked the flock and killed Sarah and Abraham.
“How did Donald respond to these events?,” asked David.
“He didn’t seem to think it was that big of a deal,” said Drew. “He seemed to be relieved that he would have fewer sheep to watch.”
“That’s right,” said Dorothee. “So we let him go, and your dad, your brother, Dick, and I have been caring for the sheep since then, and we haven‘t lost any more sheep.”
“It’s a good thing I came home when I did,” said David. “I’ve decided to go back to taking care of our sheep. I really couldn’t think of anything else that I wanted to do.”
“I’ll say one thing for you, David,” said his mother. “You really love those sheep and will do anything in your power to protect them. That’s a lot more than I can say for Donald.”
“You hit the nail on the head a minute ago, Mom, when you were talking about hiring Donald,” said David. “He was just watching the sheep for the money you paid him. You really couldn’t expect that he would care about the sheep as much as he would his paycheck!”
